About my animal sculptures
Animal sculpture artist
Jane lives in the New Forest and uses her observations of the animals found both locally and further afield as inspiration for her ceramic sculptures and tiled wall reliefs. Trained originally in graphics she has also designed and illustrated an international children’s pop-up book about animal behaviour. Her ceramic sculptures have been exhibited at the Society of Wildlife Artists as well as in local galleries and exhibitions.
Drawing on her knowledge of animal anatomy, she highlights muscle tone as she ‘feels’ the animal into shape to create movement and energy. The result is very tactile and each animal has a distinctive individual character. Her animal sculptures are made of unglazed stoneware and treated with oxides and underglaze colours to accentuate relief and feature.
Geological textures interest her and she tries to recreate this by using a coarse gritty clay and colours reminiscent of sandstone. She is influenced by ancient stone carving and fascinated by how a statue might have been chiselled out of a solid block, her animal sculptures often reflect this. Each sculpture is hand-crafted in a gritty stoneware clay and is unique taking many hours to complete and fired twice to achieve the finished piece.
3D Ceramic Wall art
In addition to individual animal sculpture, she produces 3D ceramic wall art. This animal wall art is either in the form of individual tiles for example a flock of birds that can be grouped by hanging separately or as a large wall art bas relief panel of herds or groups of animals such as her antelopes or family of elephants and are composed of a number of individual tiles interlocked together like a giant jigsaw to create a panel of any size that can be hung on a wall.
