Artist notes
Inspired by the close family bonds of elephants in the wild and the movements of herds, and the plight of orphaned elephants, this piece was exhibited as part of a fundraiser exhibition for elephants. The design was drawn on paper first, then scaled up and transferred to a flat clay panel made with a proportion of paper clay to reduce the weight. The elephants were then sculpted in relief and a selection of porcelain tusks were made. When the frieze was leather hard it was cut into interlocking tiles following natural contours around the animals. The tiles were treated with iron oxide and fired then the tiles were then re-assembled and mounted onto a wooden backing board and the joins grouted so that this artwork may be easily hung on a wall.
This was the second panel created on this theme, the first was somewhat larger at 125 cm wide.
