Antelope Wall Art – Ceramic Frieze
Artists notes: Inspired by Wildlife Movement
This hand-built ceramic 3D antelope wall art sculpture captures the grace and energy of a small antelope herd as they move in herds across the African plains.
The animals are arranged in a dynamic grouping that emphasises their movement and connection. The animal’s stylised forms are inspired by African antelopes and their gently curved horns have been accentuated to echo their elegance in this unique wall-mounted piece of animal art.
This piece reflects my ongoing interest in animal forms and the way they can express emotion and presence through their movements especially as a group.
Antelope wall art inspiration & process
The idea for this piece came from observing the way antelopes move as a group—alert, graceful, and always in tune with one another. I wanted to capture that sense of collective awareness and boundless energy in a wall-mounted contemporary format which also also echoes the techniques of the ancient stone bas reliefs found in Greece and Rome.
I work primarily in stoneware crank clay, which allows for both strength and detail and prevents warping of the ceramic wall art tiles. After the sculpture has been completed, the antelope herd frieze is divided into sections in order to fit into the kiln and part fired. The surface is then finished with iron oxides to enhance the natural texture of the clay and create tonal variation. It is then fired to a higher stoneware temperature and mounted on a custom made backing board for ease of hanging. The result is a piece that feels both ancient and contemporary rooted in the natural world yet stylised in form. This antelope herd bas relief is one of my series of 3D ceramic tiled reliefs, my Elephant Herd wall art is created in the same format.
