Artist notes: Elephant herd wall art

Elephant Herd wall art II is a hand-built ceramic wall sculpture that explores the strength and emotional depth of elephants in the wild. Inspired by the close family bonds within elephant herds and the plight of orphaned calves, this piece was originally exhibited as part of a fundraising exhibition for elephant conservation. This was the second panel created on this theme, the first was somewhat larger at 125 cm wide.

The composition captures a sense of unity, sculpted in low relief and suggests the gentle rhythm of a herd in motion. The stylised forms and textured surfaces are enhanced with iron oxide, giving the piece a warm, earthy tone that echoes the natural environment of these majestic animals. The tusks, created in porcelain add contrast to the piece and are a quiet reminder of the threat these animals face to ivory poaching.

This wall-mounted ceramic artwork works well in any contemporary space and is designed to be a bold focal point —both sculptural and symbolic—inviting reflection on the beauty and vulnerability of elephants.

Inspiration & Process

The design for Elephant Herd wall art II began as a pencil sketch, which was scaled up and transferred onto a flat clay panel. To reduce weight, I incorporated paper clay into the mix. Each elephant was then sculpted in relief onto the panel, and the tusks made of porcelain, were created separately and added after the final firing.

Once the panel reached the leather-hard stage, it was carefully cut into interlocking tiles, following the natural contours of the animals. These tiles were treated with iron oxide and fired individually. After firing, the piece was reassembled and mounted onto a wooden backing board, with the joins grouted to create a seamless frieze.

The first Elephant Herd wall art panel (below) was exhibited at The Society of Wildlife Artists Annual Exhibition.
