Artist’s notes: Ceramic bull head
My bull head sculpture Bull with Attitude is part of my ongoing exploration of animal forms expressed as if carved in antiquity from a solid block of stone. I’m particularly drawn to the way animal sculpture has been portrayed in this genre of art. This hand-built bull sculpture whilst inspired by ancient stone carvings and classical forms, also gives a subtle nod to Spanish influences. I wanted to create a piece that felt solid, grounded, and timeless. The form is intentionally stylised, with a bold presence that commands attention.
As I worked on him, he developed a certain attitude…. stubborn, proud, and slightly defiant which I feel gives the sculpture its unique character.
This ceramic bull head works beautifully as a bold focal point in a hallway, study, or contemporary living space. He’s not just a decorative object; he’s a presence in the room, inviting a moment of pause and perhaps a smile…
Inspiration & Process
The bull head sculpture is both slab built and carved from solid clay which is later hollowed out. The surface is treated with iron oxide to bring out the raw, earthy texture of the clay, and add tonality and warmth to the piece while the horns are highlighted with white underglaze to create contrast which adds tension. These finishing touches give the sculpture a sense of age and character, as if it were an artefact unearthed from a forgotten past.
I used Crank stoneware as it allows for both strength and fine detail, while the oxide finish enhances the natural warm colour and texture of the clay and almost gives the impression of bronze.
