Artist notes

This commission was for someone who spent a lot of time in Africa and I felt that  these running antelope herds would be appropriate. The design was drawn on paper and then scaled up and transferred to a flat clay panel. The antelopes were then sketched out and sculpted in relief following the design. The frieze was cut into interlocking tiles following natural contours around the animals and excess clay removed to decrease overall weight. Treated with iron oxide and reduction fired in a gas kiln which produces a warmer colour. The tiles were then re-assembled after firing  onto a wooden backing board and the joins grouted so that it could be hung on a wall.
